On 10 September at the IAA International Motor show in Frankfurt, BMW i in Partnership with TED held the final of the Next Visionaries competition. Over the past few months, 180 forward-thinkers from across the world submitted their visions for the future in a bid to search for the “next big thing” in technology. Six finalists went on to put forward their visions on stage in Frankfurt to BMW i and TED experts. The judges voted and awarded the prize to Sandra Phillips for her vision of socially conscious automated vehicles.

Sandra’s winning idea for the inaugural BMW i TED Next Visionaries competition is centred on keeping women in less fortunate communities safer. Sandra believes that the current access to transport is preventing women and children from gaining access to opportunities that would help them to better their lives. In many countries outside of Europe and North America, travelling by transport available to the majority of the public can be unsafe or unaffordable.

Sandra proposes that a network of shared autonomous vehicles will be how we will solve the issue of poor social mobility. Providing self-driving vehicles will not only create a network of safer vehicles for women, but also a more affordable mode of transport.

The evening offered the 500-strong audience a glimpse into the possible future, including what BMW have in mind – a full five days before the launch of many of our vehicles and technology. The night was topped off with an incredible after-party at local Frankfurt night spot, the Gibson Club, where world famous DJ Martin Solveig took the party into the early hours of the morning.

As winner of the BMW i TED Next Visionaries competition, Sandra Phillips will now present her vision of the future live on stage at a special TED talk this November in New York City.
