BMW Group Plant Leipzig has begun the series production of the BMW i8 Roadster alongside the updated version of its sibling: the new BMW i8 Coupé. Both models are produced within the same production line to customer demand at the German plant.
The BMW i8 Roadster oozes freedom thanks to its electrically operated soft-top roof, while the new BMW i8 Coupé stands out as a full-blooded sports car. Familiar BMW i lightweight design measures have been meticulously adapted to the specific requirements of the BMW i8 Roadster, which comes with newly designed frameless dihedral doors, aluminium chassis and ultralight high-strength carbon-fibre passenger compartment.
More than 980 vehicles roll off the BMW Group Plant Leipzig production line each day
Underpinning the new level of electric driving experience is an updated version of the lithium-ion battery developed for the BMW i8. Thanks to an increased cell capacity from 20Ah to 34Ah, the electric range of the new BMW i8 Coupé in the NEDC test cycle has increased to 34 miles*, while the electric range of the new BMW i8 Roadster is 33 miles*.
Hans-Peter Kemser, BMW Group Plant Leipzig Director, is pleased to welcome the latest addition to the BMW i family: "We are proud to produce another top-notch product at our plant. An important factor for that is the know-how and long-time experience of our employees in Leipzig with the production of electric vehicles."
The BMW i8 Coupé and BMW i8 Roadster are produced within the same production line
BMW Group Plant Leipzig has been producing BMW cars since 2005 and is one of the most modern and sustainable car plants in the world. Alongside the BMW i8 Coupé and BMW i8 Roadster, vehicles produced in Leipzig include: BMW 1 Series 5-door, BMW 2 Series Coupé, BMW 2 Series Convertible, BMW M2 Coupé, BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, BMW i3 and BMW i3s.
The market launch of the BMW i8 Coupé and the BMW i8 Roadster is due in May 2018. Find out more about these models here.
*The fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, power consumption and operating range figures were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers the different sizes of the selected wheels/tyres and the selected items of optional equipment.
