BMW Group Plant Leipzig has begun the series production of the BMW i8 Roadster alongside the updated version of its sibling: the new BMW i8 Coupé. Both models are produced within the same production line to customer demand at the German plant.

The BMW i8 Roadster oozes freedom thanks to its electrically operated soft-top roof, while the new BMW i8 Coupé stands out as a full-blooded sports car. Familiar BMW i lightweight design measures have been meticulously adapted to the specific requirements of the BMW i8 Roadster, which comes with newly designed frameless dihedral doors, aluminium chassis and ultralight high-strength carbon-fibre passenger compartment.

More than 980 vehicles roll off the BMW Group Plant Leipzig production line each day

Underpinning the new level of electric driving experience is an updated version of the lithium-ion battery developed for the BMW i8. Thanks to an increased cell capacity from 20Ah to 34Ah, the electric range of the new BMW i8 Coupé in the NEDC test cycle has increased to 34 miles*, while the electric range of the new BMW i8 Roadster is 33 miles*.

Hans-Peter Kemser, BMW Group Plant Leipzig Director, is pleased to welcome the latest addition to the BMW i family: "We are proud to produce another top-notch product at our plant. An important factor for that is the know-how and long-time experience of our employees in Leipzig with the production of electric vehicles."
