The new BMW 8 Series Coupé has been officially unveiled at the 24 hours of Le Mans. Positioned as BMW’s first ever luxury sports car, it was developed in parallel with the BMW M8 GTE, which will be competing in this historic endurance race for the first time since 2011.
The elegant racer.
The new BMW 8 Series, or just simply The 8, combines luxury with race track performance, and comes available in two models: the BMW 840d Coupé, which comes standard as a M Sport model, and the BMW M850i xDrive.
In terms of luxury, standout features include the extended Merino leather, the new Operating System 7.0, and the new BMW Live Cockpit Professional. As for performance, the highlight has to be the latest TwinPower Turbo V8 petrol engine, which is available with the BMW M850i and goes from 0 to 62mph in a mere 3.7 seconds.
The new BMW M850i xDrive can sprint from 0-62mph in just 3.7 seconds
Back on the grid.
After completing three qualifying sessions at the legendary Circuit de la Sarthe, BMW’s two drivers, António Félix da Costa (POR), and Nick Catsburg (NED), will be starting on the grid in 12th and 13th position, respectively, in the GTE Pro class. The official 24 hours of Le Mans will start tomorrow at 2PM GMT (Saturday 16 June).
António Félix da Costa said, “It was great fun to be racing against the clock with new tyres, in the dark, on this great circuit. In general, I felt at home with the BMW M8 GTE. A glance at the times tells you that we could not keep pace with the leading group. But a 24-hour race is not decided in qualifying. I am really looking forward to Saturday and Sunday.”
The grid order for the 24 Hours of Le Mans is set after three qualifying sessions
