THE ALL-NEW BMW M4 CS.
Cars & Technology20 Apr 2017
BMW M has announced another exclusive limited-run special model in the shape of the new BMW M4 CS. Filling the gap between the M4 Coupé with Competition Package and the BMW M4 GTS, the all-new BMW M4 CS continues the tradition of successful M special editions which began in 1988 with the E30 BMW M3 Evolution.
The introduction of the BMW M4 CS also sees the debut of a new BMW M model classification. Positioned above the standard M models are the performance-boosted Competition versions, a notch higher are the CS models, and sitting at the very top are the performance-maximising “brand shapers” which display a clear motorsport character – yet are fully road-legal.

The 3.0-litre high-performance engine increases the output of the M4 Competition Package from 450hp to 460hp. State-of-the-art M TwinPower Turbo technology allows the M4 CS to sprint from 0 to 62mph in 3.9 seconds while the top speed is electronically limited to 174mph. With its two mono-scroll turbochargers, charge air cooler, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing, the high-perfromance six-cylinder in-line engine is consistently committed to developing significant torque from low engine speeds and achieving high levels of efficiency.
Equipped as standard is the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic. This cutting-edge transmission has a separate oil cooler and allows both automated gear changes and manual interventions using the shift paddles on the steering wheel. It changes gears in fractions of a second without interrupting the flow of power, but employs a seventh gear to keep revs low and minimise fuel consumption over longer journeys.

The suspension largely mirrors that of the M4 Competition Package. Made from forged aluminium, the links and wheel carriers at the front and rear axles are extremely light, keeping the unsprung masses low and benefiting driving dynamics. Adaptive M suspension is fitted as standard to deliver optimised performance on both the road and track. The new BMW M4 CS has also been honed on one of the most demanding test tracks for high-performance sports cars: the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife. Its lap time of 7:38 minutes puts it in the league of super-sports cars.
Ensuring the best possible grip in all driving conditions are the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system – which includes M Dynamic Mode – and the Active M Differential. The control systems for the Adaptive M suspension, DSC and Active M Differential have been modified to suit the dynamic requirements of the BMW M4 CS, as has the set-up of the electromechanical steering. The driver has the option of adjusting the steering and suspension settings to their personal preferences or the demands of the route at hand, and can can select one of three driving modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport+) at the touch of a button.

The light-alloy wheels have been designed exclusively for the BMW M4 CS and are fitted as standard with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. These semi-slick cup tyres provide unbeatable grip and supreme lateral stability at high speeds.
The use of leather and Alcantara allows the interior of the BMW M4 CS to create a compelling ambience. Among the standard features are automatic climate control, a version of the BMW HiFi system Professional adapted to the acoustic demands of the BMW M4 CS and the Professional Navigation System.

The main feature of the prominent front end, complete with cutting-edge twin LED headlights, is the front apron with large, three-section air intakes. These provide an ample supply of cooling air to the high-performance engine and the fade-resistant M Compound brakes with four-piston callipers at the front and two-piston callipers at the rear. In addition, the front splitter is made from exposed carbon fibre designed exclusively for the BMW M4 CS.
Innovative rear lights with OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology introduced by BMW M exclusively for the BMW M4 CS and BMW M4 GTS break new ground, while the front splitter, Gurney and rear diffuser, together with the long CFRP bonnet, coupe-like roofline, sporty M exterior mirrors and muscular wheel arches, allow the BMW M4 CS to cut an extremely dynamic figure – even when standing still.
