Having made its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show this month, the highly anticipated and first-ever BMW i8 Roadster will make its market launch from May 2018. The two-seater with its electrically operated soft-top roof adds a whole new sense of freedom to the already locally emission-free mobility and high-calibre performance of the BMW i8.

The soft-top roof, which can be fully and automatically retracted quietly in just 16 seconds and at up to driving speeds of 31mph, serves as a defining element of the car's silhouette. And when folded into a compact package, it creates an additional 100 litres of storage behind the seats.

A unique mechanism allows the soft-top roof to be folded and stowed away in a perpendicular position

The BMW i8 Roadster has the same LifeDrive architecture found in the new BMW i8 Coupé, which features an aluminium chassis and carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell. The result is perfect weight balance, sustainability and exceptional sportiness.

Carpo interior trim comes as standard for the BMW i8 Roadster, comprising full-leather upholstery in Ivory White/Black. Optional extras include the Halo interior trim and the new Accaro interior trim with an Amido/E-Copper colour scheme.

Thanks to a system output produced by the electric motor and engine acting in unison, the BMW i8 Roadster has a power output of 275 kW/374 hp. It can accelerate from 0 to 62mph in just 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 155mph.

In the standard driving mode, the BMW i8 Roadster can be driven exclusively on the electric motor alone
