THE NEW BMW M8 GTE.
Cars & Technology23 Oct 2017
The new BMW M8 GTE was presented in full BMW M Motorsport livery at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt. It will compete in the upcoming 2018 FIA World Endurance Championship and, with this, will mark a return to the prestigious 24 hours of Le Mans race for BMW Racing. Beyond the world of endurance racing, it also gave everyone a taste of what to expect from the new BMW 8 Series Coupé.
BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt said: “With the BMW M8 GTE, we are bringing cutting-edge technology to the top international class of GT racing, whilst at the same time tying in with our tradition at Le Mans.”
The 500 hp, 4.0 litre, V8 engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology gives the BMW M8 GTE unmistakable speed. However, it’s the tailor-made alloy components, which are produced in the ‘light alloy foundry’ at the BMW Group Landshut plant, that give it new levels of efficiency. Its light-weight and durable engine design is perfect for endurance racing.

The use of “virtual development” tools like artificial intelligence systems and 3D printing have been fundamental in creating the new BMW M8 GTE. These innovative approaches and technologies have empowered our engineers, giving them greater freedom to find creative solutions. They also allowed for rapid prototyping and testing of parts, which helped reduce the time taken when exploring possible design improvements.
When creating the exterior of the BMW M8 GTE, we embraced a new computing algorithm. It increased our ability to run simulations on the chassis design, and meant we found the most aerodynamic body shape possible. We believe the use of modern techniques, combined with some of our more traditional tests found at the BMW Group Aero Lab, has created our best GT model so far.
