Cars & Technology13 Jun 2018
Due to launch in November, the fourth-generation of the BMW X family patriarch has been revealed. With its wealth of innovations and refreshed design, the new BMW X5 represents the most compelling embodiment yet of the familiar Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).
An increase of size over its predecessor gives the new BMW X5 an imposing appearance and enviable interior space. Perhaps the most striking feature is the enlarged BMW Kidney Grille with single-piece surround. LED headlights come as standard, while BMW Laserlight with Adaptive LED Headlights can be specified as an option to optimise the high beam function.
BMW Laserlight has a long beam range of 500m
Inside, the clear structure of the instrument panel and centre console radiates a feeling of space. New features designed to maximise well-being on board the BMW X5 include multifunction seats, cooled/heated cupholders, the Panoramic glass roof Sky Lounge and the CraftedClarity Glass Application gear lever.
A host of chassis systems are making their debut in a BMW X model, including two-axle air suspension, Integral Active Steering and the optional xOffroad package, all of which increase the car's versatility, driving dynamics and comfort. Driving Assistant Professional and Parking Assistant Plus with Reversing Assistant are highlights of its significantly expanded suite of driver assistance systems.
BMW Operating System 7.0 integrates vehicle functions through gestures, speech, a new larger touch screen and iDrive controls
For those looking for extra power, a quartet of turbochargers allow the six-cylinder in-line diesel engine fitted in the new BMW X5 M50d to produce maximum output of 294kW (400hp), while peak torque of 760Nm means the BMW M Performance model can call exceptional power.
